Bushnell Park Pump House Renovation
We teamed up with the City of Hartford and the Bushnell Park Foundation to renovate the Bushnell Park Pump House. The Pump House is not only a working pump station but it also has a “gallery” space. A complete assessment of the building is being done by the Maier Design Group. Funding was secured by the Partnership and the Bushnell Park Foundation for energy efficient improvements. These improvements, which were completed in 2021 provided new lighting, electrical, windows, doors and an ADA compliant restroom. Additional work on the roof and courtyard will be completed in 2022.
About the Pump House: The Pump House was built in 1947 by the Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Connecticut River Flood Control Program. Stones from the historic foot bridges that once provided entrance into the park were incorporated into the Tudor cottage design. The Pump House continues to be an essential part of the nine-mile conduit of the Park River and Hartford's flood control system. Part of this building is known as the Pump House Gallery, which has been used for public events.
About Bushnell Park: Bushnell Park in Hartford, Connecticut is the oldest publicly funded park in the United States. It was conceived by the Reverend Horace Bushnell in the mid-1850s at a time when the need for open public spaces was just starting to be recognized. Today the park comprises 50 acres, and is visited by over one million people each year. Paths through the park contribute to the East Coast Greenway.
