Intermodal Triangle Project

The Intermodal Triangle Project originated from the iQuilt Plan that was created in 2011 and received Federal TIGER IV funding ($10M) from the Federal Transit Administration in 2012. The project strengthens the Capital Region’s economic and employment core by improving downtown intermodal connections within the Union Station-to-Main Street triangle through creating transit hubs, complete green streets, and the innovative iQuilt pedestrian network. The project redesigned streets for more than just cars. It activated public spaces. And it brought Bushnell Park to Main Street, expanding the park’s overall acreage. Completed in June 2017, this multi-million dollar streetscape improvement project improved the pedestrian experience and improved vibrancy in Downtown Hartford.

The Intermodal Triangle Project had three components. Three separate, but intertwined infrastructure projects.

Bushnell Park North

This component of the Intermodal Triangle Project transformed the northern perimeter of Bushnell Park into a green pedestrian promenade that is a major piece of the structural framework for The GreenWalk from Union Station to Main Street. This section of the Green Walk is referred to as the Horace Bushnell Promenade.

Old State House

The federal TIGER grant included significant pedestrian and transit enhancements to historic State House Square, making it more accessible to surrounding buildings and streets, and improving bus operations. The main landscape axis of Charles Bulfinch's Old State House was extended to enhance the vistas of the landmark building, and to create a more beautiful entrance gateway from the Founders Bridge into Hartford.

Union Station

The front door street of Union Station got a handsome makeover with a new glass canopy and streetscape, strengthening the station’s link to Bushnell Park and the rest of downtown.
