The Return of the Gargoyles

Once upon a time, four chimera (aka gargoyles) adorned a seven-story art-deco building at the corner of State & Main Street. The historic building, home to Harvey & Lewis Opticians, was demolished in the mid-eighties; the gargoyles were removed and put in storage.  These four crouched figures, each representing one element of the optical trade at the time (binoculars, sunglasses, a camera and a broken pair of glasses) returned to downtown Hartford on October 30, and can be viewed in the front windows of the current Harvey & Lewis location on Asylum Street. The installation of the gargoyles is the result of a collaboration between Harvey & Lewis, the Connecticut Historical Society and the iQuilt Partnership.
